Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The combination of reggaeton and pop music did not just draw interest back to this genre but as well to Latin music as a whole. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs in Spanish mostly, and four songs in the year 2016. But during the peak of the Despacito's popularity in 2017, there were 19 mainly Spanish songs that were included in the top 100. And in 2020 it was 41. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix Despacito (2017), a number of bilingual remixes Despacito (2017) well-known artists soon began collaborating with reggaeton performers including Drake with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) as well as Madonna with Maluma on Medellin (2019). By 2020 a few reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at their genre's shift towards the mainstream. However, a younger generation of performers, including Rauw Alejandro, aimed to continue the evolution of reggaeton. He often incorporated elements from electronic dance music as well as other genres.
